From a Dream

It started in a city, where a group of professional volunteers find themselves accused of commercial espoinage because their boss is the only one who could potentially stand up to the mob boss about to commit a coup. A face-off results in apparent defeat, and they must go into hiding in one of the suburbs. One of their number, however, has managed to infiltrate the ranks of lieutenants surrounding the new mayor, and he must commit a risky raid on the enemy stronghold together with his secret lover.

Part 1, Scene 5. SUGOTTO walks along a sidewalk in a quiet suburb full of large houses with tall fences, usually decorated with points, horses and greenery. Behind him walk STEWQ and NEMRY, who wears a dark red dress with a high collar and a headband that circles her hair, which has been let down and brushed. Over the fences point orange roofs, or only trees when the houses are set deep into the property. A single house has no gate at all, only two men standing at the end of the driveway. The rest is all lawn, millimetered to within half an inch from the ground. SUGOTTO, STEWQ and NEMRY walk into the driveway.

The view leaves them in order to fly over the lawn, and over the hous, which is made up of two roofs pointing east to west, two floors high, with a one-floor north-south roof connecting it. That roof os made completely of windows, while there are no windows in the walls. From the second floor in the buildings on both ends, you can thus observe anything going on in the middle part. A guard stands on each end. The camera hovers directly above it. A table is set in the middle for eight. It's still empty, the room shaded, only two lamps by the door are on. While the camera remains stationary, the light outside changes gradually, within three seconds, from light it dark, and inside the room from dark to light. Eight people fade in seated at the table, in the middle of the meal. SUGOTTO sits on one end, with RIGO, STEWQ and NEMRY in that order on his right. UNO sits opposite SUGOTTO, with dark oiled hair and messy moustache. Next to him sits WARNER, a slim blond man with plastic trousers and a jacket with puffed sleeves. Next to him is YETRO, with a dressy green sweater and dark red hair that brushes the nape of his neck. Last in that line sits a black, balding man with the air of an accountant, which he is, who is the only one eating, cutting his meal into very fine pieces before spearing them with his fork and swallowing them. The rest lingers over wine, or simply sits to talk and listen to the conversation.

UNO
(already speaking)
It will be a boon for our city once they resume the project. I do intend to aid them with their funding. I am one of the richest men in the city after all.

SUGOTTO
The richest man, Rigard. No need to be coy in this company.

UNO
What company it is, too. I'm very glad you brought miss Pinto. Although I must say I was surprised by your decision.

SUGOTTO
She is an outstanding employee.

UNO
Of course. You've always had an eye for quality. As did I. Nothing but fine men for me.

SUGOTTO (amused)
I had not pegged you as that type, my man.

UNO
Ah, a pun. I'm not. I have many fine women too, but they fulfill different roles. As they should.

SUGOTTO
Everyone fulfills their own role.

UNO
Each human is unique.

SUGOTTO
Hm, and I must compliment you on the cuisine. I don't think I've ever had such wonderful dishes.

UNO
I will pass on your compliments. I hope you found the food to your satisfaction as well, miss Pinto?

NEMRY
(quiet for a fraction of a second, then wipes her mouth with her napkin)
Very. The steak was especially good.

UNO
Very succulent, yes?

NEMRY
A little tough, actually, but I prefer it that way.

UNO
Truly? I have never heard of such a thing before.

NEMRY
I am sure you have, sir. You are man of much experience.

UNO
Very true, but no man can see everything, and I always try to ensure I learn something new every day.

NEMRY
I'm sure that means you have a very satisfying, varied life sir.

UNO.
It is satisfactory, yes. Though today I find myself enjoying it more than most days.

NEMRY
I'm glad we managed to enliven your evening, sir.

UNO
You did.

YETRO
Shall we have another glass of wine, sir?

UNO
Certainly. What would you prefer, miss Pinto?

NEMRY
I'll leave it to this glass, sir, thank you.

In the uneasy silence that follows, the tee-dee-dee of STEWQ's phone sounds very loudly.

STEWQ
Hello?
(pause)
Yes.
(pause)
Yes.
(pause)
Now? I'm coming.
(he turns off the phone and looks at SUGOTTO)
Permission to leave early, sir?

SUGOTTO
Granted, if Uno doesn't mind, of course.

UNO
Of course not. Please give my greetings to your wife, and congratulate her.

STEWQ
(starts)
Ye-hes, sir.
(he stumbles over the chair and himself.)

Without consulting anyone, NEMRY follows STWEQ out of the room and through a hallway. He pauses to let her catch up with him, and puts an arm around her shoulder. They walk out companionably, ignoring the men in suits standing menacingly on each corner. They walk down the driveway and into the relative privacy of the streets.

STEWQ
Thanks for walking with me, you didn't have to do that. Sugotto will be mad with you.

NEMRY
I don't, really don't, care at this point. He can yell at me all he likes. You're my friend and I couldn't let you walk out of here on your own. Who knows what they would have done to you on the way. If Uno'd decided you're next you'd hever have arrived at your wife.

STEWQ
You run the same risk walking back in alone

NEMRY
No, because they expect me back at the table.

STEWQ
Not if they never mind. He was flirting with you. He won't kill you tonight.
(he chews on his lip)
But he knew about Lizzy. How the hell? Does he have supernatural hearing or something, or like is he telepathic.

NEMRY
No, just well-informed and a good guesser who wants you to think that. Don't worry, go be a brand new dad. And Shaun?

STEWQ
Yeah

NEMRY
(hugs him)
Congratulations with your new child.
(she releases him)

STEWQ
Thank you.
(makes a step backwards)
You'll be alright?

NEMRY
Fine! I can handle some testosterone! And I've got two other strong guys to cover my back. Go! Tell her I'm stopping by tomorrow with more sausage rolls than fit in that room.

STEWQ
You're evil. She'll love it!
(he runs off)

NEMRY turns around and walks back inside. The security men remain statues.
